The Markham District Development Authority (DDA) has reached a significant milestone in its mission to revolutionize the agricultural landscape of Morobe Province.
Through the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the DDA has partnered with Kumul Agriculture Limited (KAL) to launch the Markham Agro Growth Centre Project. The agreement was finalized at the Markham District Administration Office, representing a collaborative effort between the MDDA’s subsidiary, Kaiapit Sustainable Investments Ltd (KSIL), and KAL.
The project will serve as a central engine for downstream processing and value-addition. Primary focus areas include high-value commodities such as cocoa, coffee, rice, livestock, and fresh produce, ensuring that local farmers can move beyond raw production into more profitable market segments.
The signing ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation, including Markham MP and MDDA Chairman Hon. Koni Iguan, MDDA CEO Willie Pilailo, and KAL representatives Stanley Gotaha and Jennifer Baing. Local-level government presidents and board members were also present to witness what leaders are calling a “strategic unlock” for the Markham Valley’s vast agricultural potential.
Hon. Koni Iguan emphasized that this project is a core component of the district’s long-term economic vision. By building a robust, agriculture-driven economy, the initiative aims to enhance supply chain efficiency and provide local growers with better access to both domestic and international trade opportunities.
This partnership between the MDDA and Kumul Agriculture Limited is set to foster sustainable economic development, firmly establishing Markham as a premier agricultural gateway within the region.
