As the aircraft, affectionately dubbed “The People’s Balus,” touched down at Jackson’s International Airport, it was met with a traditional water cannon salute and a celebratory crowd. At the helm of this monumental flight were Captain Beverley Pakii, the nation’s first-ever Airbus A220 Captain and a trailblazer for women in aviation, alongside veteran aviator Captain Timothy Narara. Their successful journey from the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada, through Vancouver, Honolulu, and Fiji, symbolized the height of Papua New Guinean expertise and the dawn of a more connected future.
This highly anticipated moment represents the centerpiece of Air Niugini’s fleet modernization program, signaling a shift toward greater reliability and a world-class travel experience.
