DataCo was established to operate and maintain the National Transmission Network, and will supply NTN bandwidth to network license holders such as Digicel, Telikom PNG, BeMobile and internet service providers on a wholesale basis. This will occur with the transfer of Telikom’s wholesale business to Dataco. Telikom’s wholesale assets are in the process of being valued by an auditor in preparation for the transfer.
The National Transmission Network with the current strategy and supporting design cost, including the investment into the fibre optics project from Hides to LNG Plant Site, is estimated to have a total cost of K843 million.
The short term plan is to complete the current on-going projects for the first phase. These include: the construction of fibre-optic cables from Yonki to Hagen and eventually to Hides, telecommunication equipment rooms along the route and to also include Madang and Lae, then proceed to the commencement of construction and installation of fibre-optic infrastructure; with the final component to link Port Moresby to Alotau and PIPE-BU3 to Sydney.
The medium term rollout plans from 2014 to 2015 will lay 2,172km of undersea fibre optical cable to link Madang to Kimbe, Rabaul and Kavieng; and points of interconnection along the links on the PNG LNG Fibre Cable from plant site to Hides and the fibre link from Kumul platform to Daru.
